The premier wireless platform for kids partners with AAAS, the world’s largest general scientific society, on its Active Explorer Smartphone Project to allow educators to create their own smart phone-powered explorations for students

MCLEAN, VA — Kajeet, the only wireless service provider dedicated to kids and education, is pleased to announce its partnership with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and its participation in the Active Explorer Smartphone Project, a web application that integrates mobile technology into the classroom by equipping students with smartphones to increase engagement and encourage scientific exploration of their environments.

“As mobile technology is increasingly integrated into educational curriculam, the use of smartphones as new tools for scientific exploration makes perfect sense,” said Michael Flood, Vice President of Education Markets at Kajeet. “We are pleased to continue to enhance students’ learning experiences with mobile technology and through partnerships with academic communities such as AAAS.”

Beginning in October, educators and students will have access to Android™-powered HTC™ Evo 4G smartphones powered by Kajeet. These devices will utilize Kajeet’s web-based Global Mobile Award-nominated Sentinel® platform to manage Internet access, and will allow students to collaborate on schoolwork. The Active Explorer Smartphone Project will guide educators through a web application in the creation of exploration assignments that students will access via their smartphones to complete tasks, such as, conducting surveys on particular plant species, and using their smartphones to document and aggregate data with classmates.

“We are extremely excited to partner with Kajeet to bring mobile technology to the classroom and scientific community,” said Bob Hirshon, Program Director of Technology and Learning, AAAS. “There is a vital need to integrate mobile technology into the classroom to help students develop a curiosity about the natural world and to introduce twenty-first century tools necessary for success.”

Exploration assignments will vary depending upon students’ grade level and can be easily translated into other disciplines, such as social studies, art, mathematics and music. At the conclusion of the program, students are expected to demonstrate skills in data collection and manipulation, increased engagement with scientific exploration, and improved understanding of the subject matter measured via student surveys.

Kajeet makes staying connected at home or in school safe, secure and affordable. The only wireless service platform that provides Internet-filtered Android™ devices, walleting functionality, kid-friendly content and GPS technology, Kajeet enables communication and learning between kids, parents and educators in a safe setting. .

In addition to publishing Science and other science-related publications, hosting scientific conferences and meetings, and helping scientists advance their careers, AAAS undertakes numerous educational programs and activities that promote science to the public and monitor issues which affect the scientific community. AAAS works to develop programs to improve teaching and learning in science and technology.
