Kajeet, the smart phone for kids®, provides managed cellular voice, data and text messaging services for phones used as part of DTPN’s Right Back on Track Mentoring program, an initiative to keep habitual truants in school via the help of phone-based coaching and check-ins within select New York City public schools
MCLEAN, VA — Kajeet, the only wireless service provider dedicated to kids and education, is pleased to announce its alliance with the Dropout and Truancy Prevention Network, a social enterprise dedicated to providing services to schools and courts to help keep middle and high school students from dropping out.
DTPN has recently partnered with the New York City Department of Education and Mayor Bloomberg’s Interagency Task Force on Truancy, Chronic Absenteeism and Social Engagement to launch the Right Back on Track Mentoring Program for 100 middle and high school students in Brooklyn; Kajeet will provide managed network connectivity with managed voice, messaging and data services for student mobile devices.
The Right Back on Track Mentoring program uses phone-based mentors and coaches to provide at-risk children with the affirmative guidance and lifestyle accountability they need to make good decisions about school attendance. Students in the program carry cellular devices equipped with talk, text and data functionality. If a student does not appear where he or she should during a specific time, the mentor reaches out to check on his or her student’s whereabouts. Right Back on Track Mentoring works because it provides both structure and support, along with compassion and human nature.
“Kajeet is proud to be working with the Dropout and Truancy Prevention Network on ways to improve school attendance. By taking steps to combat chronic absenteeism, such as supporting the Right Back on Track program, we’re doing more than just addressing potential truancy issues—we’re preventing them from becoming habitual. Solving issues such as these is exactly why Kajeet was founded,” said Daniel Neal, CEO and founder of Kajeet.
Kajeet makes communicating with cell phones and smartphones safe for kids, reassuring for parents and provides an affordable, contract-free option for everyone. In addition to Kajeet’s free, patented online parental controls, all Kajeet mobile devices are enabled with GPS Phone Locator, another easy-to-use service parents may use to monitor their child’s location on a map and/or by designated landmarks.
“DTPN is thrilled to be working with Kajeet on this important effort. The Kajeet commitment to empowering kids with affordable technology, while also giving parents tools to keep them safe, helps achieve our goal of providing students with the support they need to stay in school,” said Peter Gudmundsson, CEO of DTPN.
The Dropout and Truancy Prevention Network is a Dallas-based social enterprise dedicated to providing services to schools and courts to help keep middle and high school students from dropping out. The company utilizes phone-based paid mentor/coaches (many of whom overcome daily physical challenges to work, such as Wounded Warriors) with location verification, cellular voice, messaging and data technology to provide at-risk children with the affirmative adult guidance and lifestyle accountability they need to make good decisions about school attendance. This combination of compassionate connection and innovative technology has been highly effective in urban settings like New Orleans, Chicago, Baltimore and Las Vegas and rural communities like Claremore, Oklahoma and Kershaw County, South Carolina.
